Abstract

"Lisa Masyitah, 2024. The Strategies Used by Students at SMAN 9 Banda Aceh for Learning Vocabulary, University of Bina Bangsa Get Sempena, Advisor I. Dr. Syarfuni, M.Pd. Advisor II. Rizka Marlisa Aini, M.Pd

This study aims to analyze the strategies used by students at SMAN 9 Banda Aceh to learn English vocabulary. This study used qualitative research. The findings of the study indicate that students generally use vocabulary learning strategies at a ""Moderate High"" level, with an overall mean ranging between 2.76 and 3.09. The most frequently used strategy is the Meta-Cognitive strategy, with a mean of 3.09. This is followed by Social and Memory strategies, each with a mean of 3.06, and Cognitive strategies with a mean of 3.05. The least frequently used are Determination strategies, with a mean of 2.76. The strategies used by students include looking up word definitions, making sentences with new words, and relating words to personal experiences. However, the use of determination strategies, such as analyzing word forms and understanding words through context, is relatively low. These findings suggest that students prefer an active and collaborative approach to vocabulary learning, with little emphasis on independent word analysis. This study has important implications for vocabulary teaching, which can be improved by encouraging the use of a wider variety of learning strategies and supporting more independent learning management."
