Abstract

This research is a qualitative study that investigates thoroughly and openly the phenomenon of the influence of regional language accents and dialects on English accent. This research aimed to know the influence between students’ of regional accent and their English accent speaking English at the second semester students in Vocational High School (SMK) 3 Sinabang. In the Academic Year 2023/2024 The researcher applied qualitative method as the best way to determine the quality of the influence of accent and dialect on students' English speaking because it is referred to describe the influence.
In this research, researcher used guidelines for five aspects of accent assessment in speaking, namely Pronunciation, Vocabulary, Stress, Intonation and Rhytm as main indicators. In each aspect of the accent, researcher found three sub-indicators in each aspect which were used as guidelines when conducting observations to find potential participants in accordance with qualitative research criteria and interview guide aspects to find solutions to research problems. This research requires data results in the form of narrative text which allows it to find problems from the research question. Therefore, this study used unstructured interview and structured interview guideline with the aim of identifying tone accents in language as the cause of the influence of changes in English on students' accents which were carried out twice for each respondent with answers in two languages, namely the respondent's regional language and English.
This study refers to the native regional language speakers to see the differences in sound and speech output in each aspect of speaking accent. The phenomenon that researchers will observe is students who are more active in using their regional language at school rather than English, which causes their regional language accent to influence their English accent when speaking. Another phenomenon that is the focus of this research is the system when teaching and learning English which sometimes don't apply practice speaking skills, causing students to be less active and trained in pronouncing English vocabulary at school.
