Abstract

This study aims to identify the factors influencing English major students’ anxiety during thesis defense presentations at private universities in Aceh. The research was motivated by the high level of anxiety experienced by students when facing high-stakes academic presentations, such as thesis defenses, which can negatively affect academic performance and self-confidence. A qualitative case study design was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews with five students who had recently completed their thesis defenses. The findings reveal four main factors contributing to students’ anxiety. First, the courtroom atmosphere, where a formal and tense setting heightened nervousness, while a friendly and supportive atmosphere reduced anxiety. Second, interaction with examiners, in which critical or difficult questions intensified anxiety, whereas constructive feedback helped reduce it. Third, the examiners’ reactions or expressions, where serious or dissatisfied expressions triggered self-doubt, while positive responses boosted confidence. Fourth, social support from peers, supervisors, and family members, which played a crucial role in providing a sense of security and reassurance. These results emphasize that environmental factors, interpersonal relationships, and emotional support play a significant role in shaping students’ psychological readiness. This study is expected to serve as a useful reference for lecturers and universities in creating a more supportive defense environment, thereby helping students minimize anxiety and improve their academic presentation performance.
