Abstract

This study attempts to examine the effectiveness of Assertion, Reasoning, Evidence, and Link Back (A.R.E.L) to enhance students’ speaking ability and the students’ perception about the use of A.R.E.L in teaching speaking. The population of this research was second grade students of SMAN 4 Banda Aceh which consist of 250 students and there were 32 students at class XI IA 2 as the sample of this experimental group. This study was pre-experimental design with one group pre-test post-test. The instruments of this research were test and questionnaire. The finding of this study revealed the mean score of pre-test was 59,42 and post-test was 62,73, and the standard deviation for pre-test was 5,37 and post-test was 4,72. Thus, the result of this study shows that t-test was 2,36 and t-table was 1,71. It showed that t-score is higher than t-table (2,36 > 1,71) which means that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Moreover, motivate students to speak in front of class and effect students understanding in giving their argument. It can be conclude that the implementation of A.R.E.L enhances students’ speaking ability and students got a positive impact after learning AREL in speaking class.
