Abstract

This study aims to find out the listening strategies applied by students in learning listening skills at Islamic Senior High School Ruhul Falah. The research design used in this study is descriptive qualitative research by using research instruments in the form of observations, interviews, and field notes. The participants in this study were 11 participants of third grade students of Islamic Senior High School Ruhul Falah and in choosing this sampling the researcher used a purposive sampling. The students were considered reliable as participants in this study because they had learned more complex listening skills compared to the first and second grades. The research design used in this study is descriptive qualitative research. Based on the research instrument, it is revealed that the listening strategies applied by students in learning listening skill at Islamic Senior High School Ruhul Falah are cognitive strategy and social-affective strategy. Cognitive strategy concerned audio playback more than once, when listening learning took place students recorded the vocabulary they got and tried to guessed the meaning of the vocabulary, some of the media students used to practice their listening skill such as video, film, audio, and music, it was also obtained that students practiced their listening skill after learning listening skills in class is complete and when they have free time, and students wanted to master English because they wanted to implement the knowledge they learned in everyday life. Meanwhile, Social-affective strategy that students used regarding if students listen to vocabulary that is unfamiliar or doubtful, they wrote down and asked the teacher or friends for the vocabulary and both teacher and students provided feedback about learning listening skills they had.
