Abstract

This study is motivated by the still minimal availability of media and teaching materials for Mathematics subjects, especially in efforts to improve mathematical problem solving abilities of grade V students of Elementary School 1 Krueng Sabee. Even statements from several Mathematics subject teachers tend to state that some of their students are still unable to independently solve mathematical problems including material on exponents so that it affects student learning achievement. The purpose of the study was to identify students' learning obstacles related to the concept of exponents in grade V elementary school students, to develop a didactic design developed to overcome students' learning obstacles in the concept of students related to the concept of exponents in improving the mathematical problem-solving abilities of grade V elementary school students and to analyze students' responses to the didactic design that had been designed on the concept of exponents to improve the mathematical problem-solving abilities of grade V elementary school students. The research method was mixed methods with the type of Research and Development (R & D). The subjects of the study consisted of teachers and students. Data collection used validation sheets and problem-solving ability tests. The results of the study showed that learning obstacles related to the operation of exponents in grade V elementary school students in terms of problem-solving abilities were generally in the moderate category. In the most dominant indicator mastered from the four indicators of problem-solving abilities was the ability to understand problems and plan solutions while the indicator that was least mastered was the ability to re-check. The didactics developed consist of aspects of identity and information, rationality of exponent number material, elements of material, didactic assessment, learning steps in didactics, sequence of learning activities, materials, tools and teaching materials, Glossary of Exponents in Didactics and assessment rubrics. The response of students to the Didactic Design of exponent number material is classified as very good with a figure of 89.8%.
