Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of the use of scanning techniques in improving students' reading comprehension. This research was conducted at the MTSS Samahani school, involving 18 students from grade VIII. This study used a quantitative method with the research design used is a quasi-experiment with pretest and post-test to measure changes in students' reading comprehension ability before and after the scanning technique is applied. The collected data were analyzed to determine the difference between students’ pre-test and post-test scores. Based on the results of previous research, the normality test showed that the significance value of the pre-test was 0.003, while the post-test was 0.000. Using a significance level of 0.05 with a sample size of N = 20, both values were lower than 0.05 (0.003 < 0.05 and 0.000 < 0.05), indicating that the data were not normally distributed. Therefore, a non-parametric test, namely the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, was used for further analysis. The result of the Wilcoxon test showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, which indicates that there is a significant difference between the pretest and post-test scores. Thus, it can be concluded that students’ performance improved after the treatment; the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, while the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, suggesting that the use of the Scanning technique is effective in improving students’ reading skills. This improvement reflects students’ increased ability to identify specific information quickly and accurately within a text. In addition, the consistent rise in post-test scores indicates that the treatment had a meaningful and positive impact on students’ reading comprehension performance. Thus, this research can be applied as an effective learning strategy to improve students' reading skills in grade 2 of MTSS Samahani.
